What to Look For in Acting Classes!

Acting is something that is best honed by practice and not by theory. This is also the reason actors need coaches in honing their craft and not teachers who tend to be more theoretical. There are several acting coaches out there but some take their job more like teachers.

Here’s what to look for in acting classes:

1. – Get a Bona Fide Coach
It pays to get an acting coach that is legitimate and genuine. He or she must have the passion for acting and backed by several experiences under his or her sleeves. The coach must have a good acting reputation from the industry. It will also help that he or she has earned some formal degree from reputable acting institution but is able to translate the methodology learned to a more practical and tangible ‘mentoring’ to his or her protege.

2. – A Good Coach Should Not Teach But Guide
You will be better off with a coach that does not teach the methods for acting but rather guide you to bring out your innate potentials as an actor. You see, acting should come naturally. No amount of techniques, skills, or methods can be useful when you do not have that innate capability to act. Your intrinsic talent is what your acting studio should be able to extract from you. Your coach should be able to use your natural acting skills to connect you to the imaginary roles that you are going to play like real.

3. – Genuine Acting Classes Need Not Make Any Guarantees Yet Delivers
Find a coach that does not promise you anything like fame, fortune, and a celebrated future in acting. Minus this promise, a good coach will always deliver. Your coach should be able to see in you your potential to succeed in the field of acting and should not or must never resort to giving your guarantees. If you come across with a coach like this, you have got to use your better judgment to be coached or not to be coached.

4. – A Good Coach will Always Have Living Testimonies
You will know good acting classes when present and former ‘learners’ are only too willing to give their testimonials how their coach have helped them reach their potentials and hone their craft in acting. Similarly, your coach shall be able to provide you with a good list of his learners that have benefited from his ‘coaching’ or ‘mentoring’. Testimonials from actual learners of how good their coach is are sure fire means to distinguish a bona fide coach from an inferior one.

When you are able to find a good acting coach, you will realize that acting transcends the four walls of the theater. Your coach should help you appreciate the beauty of portraying various “make believe ‘roles as if these are real. You’ll be able to breathe authenticity and life into your roles. Search online and there are several good acting coaches waiting for you. These coaches are ready to bring out your natural acting talent.

I DON”T NEED TRAINING…

How important is training as an actor? A professional athlete spend hours and hours perfecting their game. Off season, he or she keep up their training to get ready for the coming season. To keep in shape; to work on their weakness, to improve upon their strength; etc. Why is an actor profession any different? Ask yourself, how important is my craft? Can I improve? What are my strength? what are my weaknesses? etc. Remember you are responsible for the cultivation of your craft (profession). If you think your the champion, you better be ready for the defeat to come. Keep training and keep taking pro-active of your craft…

Cart before the Horse????

I love the enthusiasm of everyone but since I have been here I’ve noticed a strange trend. People cast before there is even a script. People are building production teams or even thinking of sets before a script. So they are trying to solidify a project that isn’t even mapped out yet.

I have even encountered a person with a film not even edited, to only then cast for a film not even written to then think of a third project. What?????

Then there are those people who have written scripts for low to no pay projects with stories taking place or have special effects or items that put it way over any budget for this category and then the film is compromised. I’m talking about explosions, and demolisions, er scenes, etc. It’s great for those who have that special effects programs and can fake it well, but most can’t. Still they put that in there anyways.

I have seen those who shoot, then during their production time, decide to put it up for kickstarter type funding for that film they are currently shooting. They said it was a no budget film, they aren’t paying anyone, but now are looking for money. Are they NOW paying people?? What is this funding for. Shouldn’t you have done this BEFORE the shoot???? As an actor, if funding is coming in as they are on set, or even after and they signed a no pay contract (just for copy and credit), I’d be suspicious and even pissed. As tech- same feeling.

I think if you go in this mode, you should stop and think about what are the consequences. You get actors / production crews on board at the wrong time and they sit waiting, waiting and waiting. WAITING for you to write the script, get a budget, get funding. Meanwhile other projects coming in that are following an orderly fashion,( script, budget, securing funding and pre-production, (this is where you can get people on board) then casting, then shooting, post) will soon take those away from you because YOU had nothing to anchor them onto your project. If you wanted to do all this for free, Definately can’t hold anyone to the project. All this does is burn people and gives you a bad reputation of not being professional or able to manage a project by not “having your ducks in a row”.

I am not sure why anyone wants this aggravation or this reputation. I love when people ask questions and seek out what is needed before they get into a film project. But so many are just running out there in the busy street.
